Blinking Butt Bugs (Day 81)

Everyone who reads this knows I love stars. They mesmerize me, they capture my attention, they make me ponder about the extent of God. The next best thing to stars is fireflies. Maybe it's because we don't have them in Dallas, maybe it's because their butts glow, but maybe it's because they are dancing stars. These faint yellow/green lights blink as they travel through space, able to travel in all directions.
Tonight I actually got my first glimpse of my blinking lights in Searcy. Why it took me four years to finally see a field of fireflies here is beyond me. The moon was out but covered by a thin layer of clouds as a friend and I headed up north. She needed to talk about a current event in her life and I honestly didn't want to spend that talk in a dorm. I wanted to get out and I knew it would help to get her mind off the situation while still being able to get her feelings out.

We headed to TNT hill but along the way saw two pastures, one on either side, filled with the blinking butt bugs. I had to pull over, I couldn't resist just driving by. We pulled to the shoulder and spent the next ten minutes staring out into the fields and watching them dance. We also tried to catch them and put their radioactive juice on our foreheads (she said she did this as a kid). We never caught one, and I'm a bit relieved by that because I don't know if I could actually kill one. They are so beautiful and unique in their own way, but whatever I could do to cheer her up.

We ended up going to the hill, talking for a bit, and then headed back. But I'll never forget those huge fields, covered in the twinkling yellow/green lights as those bugs danced around with air as their ballroom floor.
