This blessing actually happened Sunday coming back from church. I was with my family and my parents were with me. For some reason my dad refuses to let me drive even though I know the roads of Searcy so much better than him. I guess I gave him confusing directions because he pulled out of the Downtown CoC parking lot and headed down a road I had actually never been on. I had always crossed right over that road on many of my early morning, pavement pounding, runs and was always intrigued by it, but until now I had never actually been on it.
Backroads are mini adventures to me. They twist out of sight and travel to areas where few people have traveled before. If I need to get away I can usually be found getting lost out west of Searcy in the ranch and farm land. No map, no GPS, just my mind and my windows rolled down. So even though I was upset I wouldn't be getting my pancake platter from IHOP a few minutes earlier I was wondering where this new road would take me. I never imagined we would come to a bridge and slow down to 5 mi/hr. I didn't get why there were cars lining the bridge and road on both sides. As we came upon the makeshift parking lot we saw the most beautiful scene. Bald eagles were perched in trees out in the middle of a large pond and were fishing. Someone said they had counted twelve in all. This may seem strange to some, but a dream of mine was to see a bald eagle. I wanted to see them soar, wings stretched wide. I wanted to hear them call to one another and dance in the sky. I got all of that. The birds we saw were huge and as they flew to catch their meals they let out screeches to one another. But these screeches weren't the kind you hear from crows or buzzards. These were songs. They were free from everything. Nothing could keep these majestic creatures from flying. There were no worries holding them back, they weren't weighed down by the world. Some were high and circling, some were low and swooping across the top of the water. I could just sense the awesome power coming from their wings. God took something annoying and turned it in to something I had longed for since I was little. I saw God's power and beauty in those birds.
If anyone would like to see them get on Race street like you're going to Walmart and take a left on Davis. Berry Hill Park should be on your left. Keep driving until you come to a low bridge and on your left there will be a body of water. Hopefully they are still there so you can gaze at the beauty I did on Sunday.
